Fruit and Vegetable Processing in Australia Industry Data and Analysis

Michael Doyle
Analyst Melbourne, Australia May 2025

Australia's Fruit and Vegetable Processing industry has grappled with intensified import competition and declining profitability resulting from supermarkets flooding the market with private-label brands and diverting sales from established manufacturers. This shift has pressured processors to reduce prices, eroding profit margins. Supermarkets have increased sourcing from overseas processors, causing imports to climb from 43.9% to 56.9% of domestic demand, challenging domestic producers and leading to industrywide revenue falling at an annualised 1.3% from 2019-20 to 2024-25 to total $7.1 billion after a 0.2% climb in revenue during 2024-25. A consumer shift towards fresh and minimally processed foods has decreased demand for traditional processed products high in sodium and preservatives. In response to these challenges, domestic processors have turned to export markets, with exports soaring from 35.7% to 56.1% of revenue, driven by growing demand in countries like India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Processors have focused on innovation, developing healthier products with fewer artificial ingredients and emphasising their Australian-made status to appeal to health-conscious and locally minded consumers.
