Over the past five years, the aerospace industry in Germany has been significantly characterised by the intense competition between Airbus and Boeing. Quality problems, particularly with Boeing's 737 MAX series, led to a lasting loss of confidence on the customer side and favoured increased demand for passenger aircraft from Airbus. Despite existing geopolitical tensions and ongoing debates about government subsidies, punitive tariffs between the US and the European Union were temporarily suspended in 2021. The industry benefited from the expansion of low-cost carriers, which boosted demand for standard routes and short- to medium-haul models of the Airbus A320 family in particular. At the same time, rising defence spending and large-volume orders from the military and satellite-based sectors provided additional growth impetus. Over the last five years, the industry's turnover has increased by an average of 4.3% per year and is expected to reach 42.1 billion euros in 2025. Manufacturers are currently struggling with supply chain problems and production bottlenecks. With 243 commercial aircraft delivered in the first half of 2025, Airbus has so far been unable to achieve its ambitious annual target of 820 aircraft; bottlenecks in engines and components are leading to significant delays and increased capacity utilisation across the entire value chain. The situation is exacerbated by the US threat of punitive tariffs on European exports, which could put additional pressure on the export business. Against this backdrop, companies are increasing investments in personnel, supplier management and digital transformation along the production chain. Demand remains high despite all the challenges. The industry's turnover is expected to increase by 3.9% in 2025. The German aerospace industry is in the midst of a structural upheaval. Airlines are increasingly focussing on efficient medium-haul aircraft such as the A321XLR, which is further reducing demand for wide-body aircraft. The industry is responding by investing in modular technologies, automation and focussing on single-aisle models. At the same time, competitive pressure is growing from new players such as COMAC. Thanks to a major order worth EUR 2.1 billion from the German armed forces for telecommunications satellites and the good order situation at Airbus, German suppliers are benefiting from increased planning security and growth impetus. The high order backlog should help industry players to expand their profit margins over the next five years. Accordingly, IBISWorld is forecasting average annual industry growth of 5.1% over the next five years and industry turnover of 54 billion euros by 2030.
