Ceramic Sanitary Fixtures Manufacturing in Germany industry analysis

The sanitary ceramics manufacturing industry developed positively at the beginning of the last five-year period due to the high level of construction and renovation activity in Germany. Industry companies shifted the production of standard products abroad at an early stage in order to minimise their manufacturing costs and are now producing their premium product lines in increasingly automated production facilities in Germany. German customers are increasingly demanding high-quality products, as the bathroom is increasingly seen as a place of well-being. In the years 2019 to 2022, this led to an extraordinary boom in the industry with growth rates averaging over 20% per year. Only the ECB's interest rate hikes, increased energy and material prices and the subsequent decline in construction and renovation activities put an end to the strong growth. Overall, manufacturers of ceramic sanitary ware recorded average annual sales growth of 2% between 2020 and 2025.

A decline in demand from building construction and private household spending on the maintenance and repair of homes is expected for the current year. This is due to the continued high cost of building materials and the low number of building permits, which will also lead to a decline in demand for industry products. Industry turnover is expected to fall by 4.9% in 2025 and stabilise at 1.2 billion euros.

Over the next five-year period, IBISWorld forecasts that the sanitary ceramic manufacturing industry will return to a growth trajectory. The continued strong interest of consumers and project customers in high-quality products as well as ongoing investments in resource efficiency and automation are improving companies' future prospects. Shower toilets and smart toilets, which enable higher sales prices thanks to their extended functions, are increasingly in demand. The ageing of the German population is also leading to growing demand for barrier-free bathroom solutions. Against this backdrop, profit margins for sanitary ceramic manufacturers are expected to be higher in the coming years than in the last five-year period. Industry turnover is expected to grow by an average of 1% annually over the forecast period to a total of around 1.3 billion euros in 2030.

Trends and Insights

  • The production of sanitary ceramics is highly internationalised. Imports from Poland in particular are putting manufacturers under pressure.
  • Shower toilets are becoming increasingly popular with consumers, despite their higher purchase costs, thanks to their easy cleaning, high level of comfort and the fact that they are more hygienic than conventional toilet bowls.
  • The high concentration of companies in the eastern region is due to the numerous raw material deposits of gravel, quartz sand, clay and kaolin. In addition, the tradition of ceramic production and the existing infrastructure also favour the establishment of companies.
  • In each product segment, industry players compete with each other primarily on price. Companies that market sanitary ceramics need numerous showrooms and an extensive logistics network.

Trends and Insights

The ageing society increases the demand for barrier-free bathrooms

  • Demographic change in Germany is leading to a significant increase in demand for age-appropriate, barrier-free bathrooms. In 2017, only 17% of homes in Germany had an age-appropriate bathroom. In view of an ageing population, in which one in four Germans will be 65 or older in five years' time, this issue is becoming increasingly important. With 5.7 million people currently in need of care and a worsening care crisis, the German Sanitary Industry Association (VDS) has diagnosed an urgent need for action. A Forsa survey from 2024 shows that 95% of respondents rate the infrastructure of age-appropriate bathrooms as important or very important for an independent life in old age, while only half of respondents state that they have age-appropriate solutions in their own bathroom.
