In 2020, producer prices for milk fell, which had a negative impact on dairy farmers' sales, while demand shifted from bulk consumers to end consumers due to the pandemic. Demand for organic milk increased significantly, particularly in food retail, and sales grew by around 16%. From June 2020 to December 2021, both producer prices for milk and the cost of farm inputs and animal feed increased. In the following two years, dairy farmers benefited from rising prices and higher milk deliveries, with producer prices rising sharply in 2022 in particular. In 2024, the industry was characterised by the spread of bluetongue disease, which led to export restrictions and a decline in the dairy herd. The number of dairy cows fell by 3.3% to around 3.6 million animals, the sharpest decline in the last ten years. In addition to health problems and increased calf mortality, the disease also led to restrictions on offspring, meaning that many farms were increasingly reliant on additional purchases. The industry responded with preventative measures, new breeding programmes and digital herd management, while the short-term outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease at the beginning of 2025 resulted in temporary export bans.
