In recent years, the wholesale of electronic components and telephones in Germany has been characterised by strong fluctuations and structural changes. After a boom in demand triggered by digitalisation, electromobility and connectivity solutions, the industry was hit by a global chip shortage caused by production stoppages and increased demand during the pandemic. Companies had to fundamentally rethink their procurement and warehousing concepts to mitigate shortages and price spikes. At the same time, geopolitical tensions and technical innovations with short product cycles made long-term planning more difficult. Industry sales increased by an average of 4.5% per year between 2020 and 2025. This was mainly due to the strong increase in sales in 2022, when wholesalers sold large quantities of products at higher prices due to high demand and product shortages. In the following years, 2023 and 2024, however, sales declined due to excess stock held by customers.
