Hollow Glass Manufacturing in Germany Industry Data and Analysis

Analyst Frankfurt, Germany August 2025

In the last five years, industry turnover has increased by an average of 2.4% per year. The main reason for this is the increasing health and environmental awareness of consumers, which has led to high demand for glass containers from companies in the food and beverage industry over the past five years. The industry also benefited from a broadly diversified customer structure, which ensured stable sales markets in various segments such as spirits, wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages. The high recyclability of glass, its environmental benefits and manufacturers' investments in energy-efficient technologies and sustainable packaging also contributed to the positive development of the industry. Leading companies such as O-I Germany and Verallia used economies of scale, customisation opportunities and innovation projects to strengthen their competitive position. In 2025, industry turnover is expected to fall by 0.4% to €4 billion. This development is likely to be primarily due to weaker demand from downstream sectors and the reduction in inventories. In addition, high energy prices continue to weigh on Germany as a production location and increase investment pressure on energy-intensive manufacturers. Nevertheless, the industry remains innovative and is benefiting from consumer preferences for neutral-tasting premium packaging. Consumers perceive glass as sustainable and quality-preserving, which opens up additional sales opportunities, particularly in the premium segment. The positive market impetus provided by new varieties, changed recipes and smaller packaging units is supporting demand despite economic uncertainties.According to IBISWorld forecasts, sales will increase by an average of 0.9% annually and therefore amount to €4.2 billion in 2030. The container glass industry faces several challenges and opportunities. A new ANSES study shows that microplastics in glass bottles are mostly caused by closures and not by the glass itself. The industry is responding with better materials and cooperation along the supply chain. At the same time, high production costs mean that companies are increasingly switching to other countries. The increasing reuse of glass containers is reducing the demand for new production, while ecologically questionable beverage cartons are becoming less attractive as an alternative. As a result, glass is once again making a name for itself as a sustainable packaging solution. Technological innovations such as lightweight glass and modern production processes reduce energy consumption, emissions and transport costs. Companies are increasingly investing in premium segments with a low reuse rate.
