New legal regulations and the coronavirus crisis have led to a number of upheavals in recent years. Demand for industry products remained high despite restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic and led to a significant increase in sales in 2021. Industry sales subsequently declined. Since 2022, but particularly strongly in 2022 itself, both producer and import prices for motorbikes and e-bikes as well as parts and accessories for them have risen sharply. This increased the cost of materials and had a negative impact on the profit margin. Industry players attempted to counteract the increased material costs with their own price increases. The sharp rise in the consumer price of motorbikes in 2023 had a positive impact on the profit margin. In 2025, the trade in and maintenance of motorbikes is expected to generate turnover of €5.4 billion, which corresponds to a decline of 1.5% compared to the previous year. Since 2020, turnover has fallen by an average of 1.8% per year. The negative sales trend in this period was slowed by a boom in e-bikes and light motorbikes and scooters. At the end of 2024, many purchases of motorbikes with the Euro 5 standard were brought forward due to an impending tightening of regulations, which is likely to limit sales growth in the current year.
