Saunas, Spas and Solariums in Germany industry analysis

While sunbeds still had a broad user base in the 2000s, a significant structural decline set in by 2009 at the latest. This was reinforced by scientific findings on the health risks, in particular the increased risk of skin cancer due to UV radiation. Legal restrictions such as the ban on minors and increased health awareness led to a significant decline in the number of sunbed users. As a result, many specialised operators had to leave the market or reposition themselves. At the same time, the sauna established itself as a health-promoting facility. Scientific studies confirmed the positive effects of regular sauna sessions, which further supported the high visitor numbers and increased the social status of the sauna. Between 2020 and 2025, the industry's turnover increased by an average of 14.2% per year to 2.1 billion euros, which is mainly due to the low turnover in the pandemic year 2020.

Industry Statistics and Trends

Market size and recent performance (2015-2030)

Industry revenue has grown at a CAGR of 14.2 % over the past five years, to reach an estimated €2.1bn in 2025.

Trends and Insights

In view of the health risks, the number of sunbed users in Germany is falling

  • Intense UV radiation, such as that which occurs when using sunbeds, is a significant risk factor for the development of skin cancer. This is why the WHO categorised the use of sunbeds as carcinogenic for humans back in 2009. The Institute of Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen has analysed the use of sunbeds and confirms a significant decline. While 14.6% of Germans still used sunbeds in 2012, this proportion had fallen to just 5.1% of 16 to 65-year-olds by 2022.
