While sunbeds still had a broad user base in the 2000s, a significant structural decline set in by 2009 at the latest. This was reinforced by scientific findings on the health risks, in particular the increased risk of skin cancer due to UV radiation. Legal restrictions such as the ban on minors and increased health awareness led to a significant decline in the number of sunbed users. As a result, many specialised operators had to leave the market or reposition themselves. At the same time, the sauna established itself as a health-promoting facility. Scientific studies confirmed the positive effects of regular sauna sessions, which further supported the high visitor numbers and increased the social status of the sauna. Between 2020 and 2025, the industry's turnover increased by an average of 14.2% per year to 2.1 billion euros, which is mainly due to the low turnover in the pandemic year 2020.
