The operators of domestic sawmills and planing mills look back on an ambivalent development of their industry over the past five years. The years 2021 and 2022 were an exceptional growth phase for German sawmills, planing mills and impregnation plants. In 2021, German sawmills, planing and impregnation plants already achieved record figures and a year-on-year increase in turnover of more than 40%, which was exceeded again in the following year 2022. The high demand for construction timber, driven by the construction boom in Germany and the USA, continued and peaked. In addition, the revival of international supply chains following the coronavirus pandemic provided strong impetus in the packaging industry. The first signs of a trend reversal did not emerge until mid-2022, when the European Central Bank began to raise interest rates very sharply in response to persistently high inflation and the construction industry gradually showed signs of weakness. In 2023, sales at sawmills, planing and impregnation plants slumped by more than 25 %. The number of building permits fell and many construction projects were cancelled or postponed. Industrial production also weakened noticeably, which was reflected in lower demand for wooden packaging materials such as pallets and crates. Overall, the industry's turnover shrank by an average of 9.5% per year in the period between 2021 and 2026.
