Industry Statistics and Trends
Market size and recent performance (2016-2031)
Industry revenue has declined at a CAGR of 1.1 % over the past five years, to reach an estimated $4.1bn in 2026.
Trends and Insights
Residential construction weakness has directly translated into lower engineered wood revenues and thinner backlogs
- An estimated 1.364 million housing units were started in 2024, down 3.9% from 2023. In 2023, single-family housing starts were down 6.0% from 2022 levels and multi-family housing starts were down 14.0% from 2022 levels. Sinking housing starts in 2023 and 2024 removed the industry’s primary demand engine, with single‑family and multifamily projects both retreating from 2022 levels. As new starts fell, fewer structural panels and beams were specified, compressing order books and eroding the pricing power that had been supported by earlier construction tightness.

Industry outlook (2026-2031)
Market size is projected to grow over the next five years.
Trends and Insights
Rebounding housing starts will shift the industry back toward volume-led growth, but with limits
- After declining over the past five years, housing starts are poised to gain over the next five years. According to the Congressional Budget Office, housing starts will be strong over the next decade, averaging 1.59 million per year. This will restore the single most important demand engine for engineered wood, rebuild order visibility for wholesalers and contractors and support higher utilization rates after several years of capacity underuse.
