Cost-of-living pressure and stronger online competition have changed, rather than displaced, the Convenience Stores industry. Shoppers are buying fewer discretionary items and using supermarkets and supermarket apps for routine top-up purchases, forcing convenience store operators to rely less on broad ranges and more on fast-turning, higher-margin lines like coffee, chilled meals, drinks and confectionery. This shift has been supporting profit margins in recent years, as immediate-consumption food and beverages generally earn stronger returns than tobacco and other traditional traffic drivers. Stores are trimming slower-moving stock, refining layouts and tailoring labour and inventory more tightly to local demand and turnover. This trend has pushed revenue upwards at an annualised 1.8% to an anticipated $6.3 billion over the five years through 2025-26, though revenue is expected to dip 3.6% in 2025-26 as cost-of-living pressures impact spending and supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths encroach on sales.
